From the Back Cover

Supply Chain Engineering considers how modern production and operations management (POM) techniques can respond to the pressures of the competitive global marketplace by integrating all activities in the supply chain, adding flexibility to the system, and drastically reducing production cost.

Several POM challenges are answered through a comprehensive analysis of concepts and models that assist the selection of outsourcing strategies and dynamic pricing policies. The ramifications of these topics are discussed from local to global perspectives.

Supply Chain Engineering also presents inventory control policies, radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies, flexible and re-configurable manufacturing systems, real-time assignment and scheduling methods, new warehousing techniques.

In addition, a significant part of the book is devoted to: lean manufacturing, line balancing (assembly lines, U-lines, and bucket brigades), and dynamic facilities layout approaches.

Explanations are given using basic examples and detailed algorithms, while discarding complex and unnecessary theoretical minutiae. Moreover, all the examples have been carefully selected with a view to eventual industrial application.

Supply Chain Engineering is written for students and professors in industrial and systems engineering, management science, operations management, and business. It is also an informative reference for industrial managers looking to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their production systems.

About the Author

Alexandre Dolgui is Director of the Centre for Industrial Engineering and Computer Science at the Ecole des Mines de Saint-Etienne (France). His principal research focuses on manufacturing line design, production planning and supply chain optimization.

Professor Dolgui is an Area Editor of Computers and Industrial Engineering, and Associate Editor of the Omega and the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. He is also an editorial board member of several journals, including the International Journal of Production Economics, the International Journal of Systems Sciences (past Associate Editor) and the International Journal of Manufacturing Technology and Management.

He is a member of various international advisory councils, such as the Board of the International Foundation for Production Research; the IFAC Technical Committee TC 5.1 Manufacturing Plant Control; and TC5.2 Manufacturing Modelling for Management and Control. Professor Dolgui is also Chairman of the French CNRS (National Council for Research) working group on production system design.

Jean Marie Proth is a university professor, consultant and Research Director at France's INRIA (Research Institute in Computer Science and Automation). He was formerly Director of the Sagep team and of INRIA's Lorraine centre, as well as an Associate Member of the Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering, University of Maryland (USA).

Professor Proth's research focuses on operations research techniques for production management, especially facility layout, scheduling and supply chain. He is Co-editor of the journal Applied Stochastic Models and Data Analysis, and a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing, Systems Automation: Research and Applications, and the International Journal of Production Economics.

He is Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics and has been Guest Editor of Engineering Costs and Production Economics. In the past, Jean Marie Proth has been an officer for the International Society for Productivity Enhancement, where he was Vice-President of Flexible Automation from 1992 to 1995.
